Summer is approaching: many people book their trips outside the country. But who pays the travel costs in case of a short-term corona infection?

The Chamber of Labor of Upper Austria emphasizes that cancellation insurances cover the trip’s costs in case of corona illness. However, insurance companies remain vague about what happens in the event of a Corona infection on vacation and exactly what benefits are offered, the AK reported Wednesday.

With Corona infection before the journey, insurance companies carry the costs

The consumer protectors advise obtaining absolutely before booking exact information on the free cancellation options and the scope of travel insurance services. Particularly with expensive journeys, cancellation insurance is meaningful. The AK recommends ensuring that the risks of a corona illness during the trip are also covered.

Corona illness at short notice: Only cancellation insurance helps here

In principle, a booked trip can be canceled. However, the agreed cancellation fees must then be paid. Some tour operators offer additional packages for a price, in which trips can be canceled free of charge up to 15 or seven days before departure. However, if you fall ill shortly before departure, this is no help. Only additional cancellation insurance will help.

Five insurance companies cover cancellation costs, according to AK

According to the AK, five insurance companies cover the cancellation costs if the insured person falls ill with corona before the start of the trip, four of them only in the event of a suspected infection. If one falls sick during the vacation, two institutions cover the costs of medical treatment, a return trip, and the additional stay or quarantine accommodation – provided there is no travel warning (level 5 or 6) from the Austrian Foreign Ministry.

Three insurances pay for treatment and emergency transport

Three insurances cover treatment costs and emergency transport to Austria. Credit cards with included travel insurance do not provide coverage in the event of a corona illness unless they cooperate with Europäische Reiseversicherung.
